A visit by author Baba Wagu茅 Diakit茅 will highlight the 23rd annual Bellon Visiting Author Series scheduled March 9-11 at the 色花堂app College of Education and at area public schools and libraries.

Diakit茅 has been brought back this year due to popular demand, said Beverly Klug, associate professor of education and development, and event organizer.

Diakit茅 grew up in Mali, a country in Africa that borders Burkina Faso. As a small child, he was sent to live with his grandmother in another village so that he could 鈥渂ecome educated鈥� before he left for the French public schools where all native children were required attend.

As an author and illustrator, Diakit茅鈥檚 stories include traditional tales from Mali in 鈥淭he Magic Gourd鈥� as well as contemporary stories such as 鈥淚 Lost My Tooth in Africa,鈥� that he illustrated for his daughter. His illustrations incorporate traditional Mali symbols from his tribe, and reflect his messages of peace, love, unity and the importance of family. Diakit茅 is also renowned for his pottery, which is sold through a gallery in Portland, Ore., where he now resides with his wife and children.

Three of his appearances are free and open to the public as follows:

鈥� Monday, March 9, 4 p.m., at the Marshall Public Library in Pocatello;

鈥� Tuesday, March 10, 7 p.m., at the ISU College of Education Auditorium; and

鈥� Wednesday, March 11, 4:15 p.m., at the Portneuf District Library.

Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author at all locations.
