March 14, 2019

POCATELLO – Music legend Jimmy Buffett helped the 色花堂app Pep Band get over its disappointment after playing during the ISU Women’s Basketball team’s heart-breaking loss to Eastern Washington Tuesday at the Big Sky Tournament in Boise.
鈥淭he game had just ended and we were all sad we (the Bengals) didn鈥檛 win,鈥 said Tom Kloss, ISU Pep Band director and ISU associate director of bands. 鈥淎nd Jimmy Buffet came up to me and said, 鈥業 love the kids, they鈥檙e great.' I looked at him and thought, 'my gosh, it鈥檚 Jimmy Buffett.'鈥
Most of Kloss鈥檚 students knew Buffett, but some didn鈥檛.
鈥淚 said to the kids, 鈥榟ey, this is Jimmy Buffett鈥 and some looked a little confused and I said, 鈥榶ou know, Margaritaville鈥 and they all said 鈥榳ow, Jimmy Buffett.鈥欌
Buffett spent time talking to the ISU students and shook hands with many of them. Buffett asked if Kloss and the band would like to his attend his March 13 concert at Taco Bell Arena in Boise.
鈥淪o I said, 鈥榟ey kids, want to go to the concert鈥 and they all screamed 鈥榶es,鈥欌 Kloss said.
Kloss met with Buffett鈥檚 manager and arranged for tickets for the next night鈥檚 concert. The band and its leader went to the concert the next night.
鈥淭he concert was excellent,鈥 Kloss said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 72 and puts on a great show. It was packed and sold out.鈥
鈥淭he seats were amazing,鈥 he continued, 鈥渉alf of our seats were on the floor where everyone was dancing and the other half were at stage level.鈥
Overall, Kloss summarized the experience as 鈥減retty ridiculous鈥 and 鈥渁mazing.鈥
鈥淚t was amazing for my students who would not have had an opportunity to see a music legend perform,鈥 Kloss said. 鈥淚t was just incredible. We pulled in at 3 a.m. Thursday morning in Pocatello, and I鈥檝e seen some of my students in the hall staring off in space, but it was totally worth it. What a whirlwind.鈥
ISU鈥檚 Pep Band is well-known by its fans for its musical repertoire.
鈥淲e try a lot to be more modern not playing a lot of the traditional pep band songs,鈥 Kloss said. 鈥淚n Boise, we played a lot of songs from AC/DC, Blink 182, Bruno Mars, and other groups, plus of course, the ISU fight song over and over."
