ISU Students Guide Prestigious International Event
April 24, 2025
The 54th Frank Church Symposium 2025, Women Today: Politics, Perception and Power showcased the remarkable growth and dedication of its student members of 色花堂app’s International Affairs Council (IAC).
Under the leadership of IAC President Laura Schuhmann and Faculty Advisor Dr. Colin Johnson, the council expanded to 15 active members who played a central role in organizing, promoting, and executing this year’s event. From managing logistics to hosting speakers and moderating panels, students gained hands-on experience that deepened their understanding of global issues while building their professional skill sets.
It was Schuhmann’s third time taking part in the symposium. “This year’s theme meant a great deal to me personally, and it was incredibly moving to see how many others felt the same,” she says. “I’m grateful to have worked alongside such dedicated students, to have met our inspiring delegates, and to witness how far the International Affairs Council has grown.”
This year, 19 distinguished delegates shared their expertise—from local leaders like Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad, ISU President Robert Wagner, and Idaho State Senator Melissa Wintrow to global voices such as Dr. Soledad Prillaman of Stanford University and United Nations Human Rights Champion Kekhashan Basu. The two-day event featured timely and thought-provoking discussions, including the “Media’s Frame” panel introduced by Executive Secretary Luke Holsten, which highlighted themes like healthcare advocacy and grassroots change.
"The opportunities I had to connect with a wide-variety of panelists was amazing this year," said IAC Vice-President Cecily Shepherd. "I am so impressed with the way the IAC worked together to bring us all together, to discuss important and sometimes challenging topics.”
Schuhmann expressed pride in the council’s accomplishments and confidence that this year’s success marks the beginning of even greater things to come.
“The future of the IAC is bright, and I’m honored to have been part of a legacy that will continue to create space for global dialogue and student leadership for years to come,” she said. “Being part of something this important has been my highlight of my time at ISU.”
With opportunities for networking, leadership, and real-world engagement, the IAC continues to empower students to think globally and act locally. Students interested in joining are encouraged to reach out and be part of next year’s symposium planning. Please contact IAC faculty advisor, Dr. Colin Johnson, at colinjohnson@isu.edu.
The IAC was started in 1970 in memory of the late Senator Frank Church and has since then organized the Frank Church Symposium on international affairs every spring on the Pocatello campus of ISU. This international symposium is a rare forum in the United States because it is fully student-organized and primarily funded by the generosity of our student government body, ASISU.
